No matter how careful we are, a wound may become infected. With proper care, the infection can be treated and the wound will continue to heal. If the infection is not responding to treatment, please seek immediate care from your doctor or a qualified medical professional.
Classic signs of wound infection include:
Heat
Redness
Swelling
Pain
Additional signs of wound infection include:
Fluid or pus
Delayed healing
Contact bleeding
Strong odor
Cuts, grazes, and other skin breaks can become infected when bacteria enter the wound and begin to multiply.
The risk of wound infection is higher if:
The wound is large, deep, or has a jagged edge.
Dirt or foreign particles entering the wound.
The cause of the wound was a bite from an animal or another person.
The cause of the wound was an injury involving a dirty, rusty, or germ-containing object.
