How are you treating your wound?
Most of the time, you can treat your wound with medical supplies in your first aid kit or medical cabinet. If your wound requires emergency care, please seek medical attention immediately.
If you have an acute wound, your treatment options include:
Compression using a clean cloth or sterile bandage.
Cleaning the wound with clean water and a saline solution.
Antibiotic ointment as a precaution against infection.
Stitches or staples to help the wound begin to heal.
Over-the-counter pain medication (non-aspirin is preferred) to reduce pain and swelling.
If you have a complex/difficult wound, your treatment options include:
Advanced dressings to assist your body's natural healing process.
Antibiotic and antiseptic treatments to provide greater protection against infection.
Compression therapy that exerts external pressure on your lower legs to improve blood flow.
Debridement (de-breed-ment) that removes dead or infected tissues and other impurities that slow down wound healing.
Moist wound healing that allows for the wound to heal more rapidly in a controlled moisture environment.
Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) that uses a vacuum to help wounds heal more quickly.
Skin substitutes and grafts that provide a healthy structure for wound healing to progress.
