What are the three phases of wound care?

The more you know about wound care and wound healing, the greater your chances are of getting back to your daily activities. To help add to your knowledge, we are happy to share the three phases of wound care with you.

Phase One: Acute Wound Care

In this phase, acute wounds progress through the four stages of wound healing in an expected timeframe (usually between 14 and 30 days). The four stages of wound healing are:

Phase Two: Complex/Difficult Wound Care

In this phase, a wound has been treated for more than 30 days and is not healing. The ideal treatment for this phase of wound care requires a scientifically validated approach that breaks the plateau of complex/difficult wounds. This approach helps boost the body's healing properties and the wound can more rapidly progress toward healing. Early treatment of complex/difficult wounds improves the quality of life for patients and helps defend the body from additional wound complications.

Phase Three: Surgery and Hospitalization

In this phase, a wound has failed to respond to Phase One and Phase Two wound care measures. The wound is impacting the quality of life for the patient and additional medical complications may begin to occur. Surgery is required to correct the damage the wound is causing. Hospitalization is required for the patient's recovery. It may be determined that the patient may require long-term treatment and recovery in a specialized healthcare facility. The patient's lifestyle and the ability to care for themselves may be changed permanently.
